Sculptures are to be found throughout Dublin city centre. To most people they are just part of everyday life, they are part of the landscape of the city. Unlike art in art galleries, sculptures are quite often public works of art. They are pieces of art for the public. Many have been given nicknames by the people of Dublin, such as ‘The Hags with the bags’ and the ‘Floosie in the Jacuzzi’. As a child I remember these two sculptures along with the ‘Children of Lir’ sculpture, in the Garden of Remembrance. I believe that quite often as adults we are too busy to look around us, whereas children are constantly observing and exploring their surroundings. This idea of sculpture being a public art can be seen with ‘Two Women’. Quite often while walking past I have seen people sharing the bench with the sculptures. Another one that is worth looking at is the sculpture of James Connolly at Beresford Place. When close by you will notice that the left shoe is much shinier than the rest of the statue. That is because people believe that it is good luck to rub his left shoe. Sculpture and the 1916 Rising A lot of our sculptures are historically based, from the Famine figures at Custom House Quay to the Dublin and Monaghan Bombing Memorial on Talbot Street. The following sculptures would link in well to lessons based on the 1916 Rising Check out these interesting links:

When it comes to fundraising each school has their own ideas. A Fair can be not only a great fundraiser but also a very rewarding experience.
i have been involved in organising cake sales, shows, book sales and my favourite Christmas fairs. Although the Christmas Fair does take the most work it can be a great day for all involved. Here is a quick look at some things we do for our Christmas Fair, of course Easter and Summer Fairs can work just as well. The most important part is to be organised and make sure to share the workload. |
AuthorI have been teaching for several years and hope to share some of my ideas and experiences with you. Archives
