Earlier this year myself and a friend of mine were asked if we would run the Green Schools Committee in our school. At first it all seemed a bit daunting as we were unsure of the process. We spent some time looking at the Green Schools website to figure out exactly where to start. Biodiversity- Getting Started It lays out each step clearly and makes the whole process seem a lot more manageable. So here is what we have done so far and some things we hope to do in the future. Survey: We began by putting together a survey to check what the children know about biodiversity. It turns out we are pretty much starting from scratch, the boys know very little about Biodiversity. 2. Action Plan: We looked at our school's previous action plans to see what our action plan should be like. We jotted down a few ideas and planned when we would have our first Green Schools meeting. 3. Committee members: We went to each class to confirm the names of the Litter Wardens, Tap Detectives, Electricity Monitors and Green Schools Committee members. We then invited all of these members to attend our first meeting. 4. Meeting #1: We met all of the members and went through the responsibilities for each role. We then kept the Green School Committee for a short meeting where we agreed the date for our next meeting. Discussed biodiversity and asked the children if they had any ideas of how we encourage Biodiversity in our school. From these ideas we decided that we will do the following:
We will meet once a month with our Green School Committee. Once our first meeting takes place we hope to have a better gauge on how much we will get done this year. With anything new i find that we can often over plan so we will try to integrate this as much as possible with our SESE planning for Term 3.
If anyone has any tips they would like to share or advice for us we would love to hear it :)
